Experiments in Engagement (Art as Exchange)

I was never really happy with traditional concepts of displaying paintings, just showing what I produced without direct interaction. For a long time I didn’t even look for exhibition opportunities and when I finally did, I experienced them more as (often isolating) exercises in retail than opportunities to communicate directly. As a consequence, I started experimenting with sharing the process of painting, by providing drawing panes (Response Panels) alongside the paintings, inviting others to draw or paint on them with me (Experiments in Engagement).

Eventually, this culminated in initiating AAEX (Art as Exchange) as a more permanent platform for exchange and collaboration between (mainly) visual artists, as a framework for a continuous development of projects with others, like musicians or actors and directors might do…
